It is a condition that can be treated effectively as long as the cause of the bad breath is addressed.

It has been found that the causes range widely but 85-90% of all the causes originate from the mouth itself.

The seven most common causes of bad breath are:

1. Accumulation of Food Debris: Accumulation of food debris on or between the teeth or over the surface of the tongue is the most common cause for bad breath. Bacteria act on these food particles and produce products which give off the foul odor.

2. Tooth Decay: The decaying of tooth or Dental Caries is an important causative agent of bad breath. The bacteria act in a putrefactive manner on the tooth which leads to its demineralization causing bad breath.

3. Dryness of mouth (Xerostomia): Saliva is a natural mouthwash and shows extensive anti-bacterial action. When saliva production in the oral cavity is decreased, it leads to plaque accumulation which favors the growth of odor causing organisms.

4. Gum Diseases: Gum disease and periodontal disease also play an important role in causing halitosis.

5. Smoking: The accumulation of nicotine, tar and other foul smelling substances in mouth causes typical bad breath in smokers known as smoker's breath.

6. Severe Dieting: Severe dieting causes numerous health hazards including bad breath. The foul odor is due to ketoacidosis which is caused due to prolonged starvation.

7. Extra-oral sources: Although, it's most commonly found that the source of bad breath is the mouth itself, there are also many conditions in which extra-oral sources are to be blamed such as diabetes, infections of respiratory tract and kidney dysfunction.

Another important aspect of halitosis that should be considered is Halitophobia or delusional Halitosis which is prevalent among quarter of the people who seek professional advice for Halitosis. Halitophobia is the fear of having bad breath which drives these people to seek professional advice.

Now, let us look at the remedies of bad breath which should help banish your bad breath.

• It might sound obvious but the best way to keep bad breath at bay is by brushing your teeth regularly. Not just brushing often but brushing correctly is the key. So, learn to brush correctly and regularly.
• As we had mentioned earlier, tooth decay is an important causative agent of Halitosis and it needs to be addressed. Tooth decays are generally treated by fillings or Root Canal Treatments.
• Dry Mouth (Xerostomia) decreases the saliva production and the causative agent for the condition needs to be rectified. Drinking plenty of water and chewing sugar-free gum helps a lot.
• Avoid tobacco chewing or Smoking which leaves their products in the mouth and cause bad breath.
• Using a mouth wash may hide your bad breath but does not mean that the condition has been treated.
• Bad breath which occurs when you are hungry is normal and should go away after you munch on something.
• Rinse your mouth after every meal.

DentalHealthSite.Com - Dental blog with the latest news from the dental industry.Read our article on dental insurance.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Cristian_Stan

P/S: It is embarrassing when talking to the person that we like if we have bad breath. Temporally solution will be chewing gum. But we can't do that for long. Besides we might just need somebody to point out that we really do have bad breath. Often times bad breath can cause a lot of mental anguish and cause you not to want to go out and have fun. One Home Remedy for Bad Breath is avocado. Avocado is known to drastically reduce intestinal putrefaction which is one of the leading causes of bad breath. Avocado can be found in most grocery stores in the fruit section. Try eating more of this fruit and you will see that your bad breath condition will start improving.

2. When brushing your teeth, make sure that you are brushing long enough. Every area of the mouth should be brushed along with every inch of every tooth. Use a soft bristled brush and use back and forth motions on each area of the teeth. You also want to make sure that you brush your tongue good. This is often overlooked by many people, and is one of the main causes of bad breath. The tongue has a lot of bacteria on it that needs to be cleaned. A good tongue scraper can also do really good.

3. When flossing, make sure you use around 15 inches of floss each time, and make sure that it is floss with fluoride. Do not miss any teeth when flossing, and make sure you get every area of every tooth.

4. Another thing that is linked with bad breath is having a dry mouth. Make sure that you drink around 8-12 glasses of water each day to keep hydrated. You also want to make sure that you eat lots of fruits. Fruits have a ton of water, vitamins, and minerals that can help with bad breath.

5. Another thing that you can do to reduce the amount of bad breath that you have is to cut down or eliminate the amount of dairy product that you take in. Dairy can make your bad breath worse because it can make your stomach create really foul odors.

6. You can also reduce the amount of protein that you take in. Proteins and meat are known to cause bad breath. When you cut out some of this stuff that I have mentioned, you are on your way to getting rid of bad breath.

7. One thing that has been found to reduce the amount of bad breath is sugarless yogurt. Recent studies show that sugarless yogurt reduces the compounds found in bad breath. Pour through a well strainer and use as a mouthwash or gargle two times in a day. This is one of the good Home Remedy for Bad Breath.

2) Chew some filberts (hazelnuts) gradually as they will absorb the bad breath

3) One more effective Home Remedy for Bad Breath is Fennel. Fennel is useful herb and can be used in many ways. Chew the leaves of this herb and allow the saliva to build up in your mouth. It can be one of the most embarrassing personal hygiene problems to afflict us, especially when it's pointed out by someone else. And, for most of us, bad breath is likely to be the result of poor dental hygiene.

Here are four simple actions, you can easily take, to make the difference.

1. Brush Your Teeth Regularly and Well

The first tip to relieve bad breath is a bit of a no-brainer. Regular teeth brushing makes a big difference. It's vital to brush your teeth at least twice daily to avoid the accumulation of food debris. And plaque, even more of a problem, is avoided as well, which is much more difficult to notice much of the time.

By regularly brushing the teeth, any nasty plaque gets dislodged and fails to build up. But if you only brush once a day, or miss occasionally, you will find that it builds up and is a lot more difficult to shift.

This is a really important message for those who suffer from bad breath. Your teeth may look and even feel clean, but unless you brush your teeth regularly, it's the plaque build up that will leave your breath unpleasant.

When brushing your teeth, don't forget your tongue. According to many studies, your tongue harbors bacteria that may cause bad breath.

2. Floss It!

You can do more than brush your teeth! Sometimes it's difficult to dislodge every bit of food that gets stuck, so getting it out is important, if you want to see the back of bad breath completely.

There are all sorts of weird gizmos and tools out there to do the flossing, yet it need not be that complicated. As a preference, you might find a straightforward non-shredding floss, on a long, long (25 meter - a lot of floss) roll which will last you for ages.

Remember to floss before you brush, so that the newly dislodged bits between your teeth will be finished off by the brushing.

3. Visit Your Dentist Regularly

Dental hygiene, to improve your bad breath, can be maintained easily by ensuring that you see your dentist regularly. It's usual to have checkups every 6 months or so and dentists being as they are, will often call you or write to remind you. It's their living, after all!

There's a whole lot of hot air about the value of seeing a dentist. Suffice to say it's always good value, because prevention is a lot cheaper than paying for real emergencies.

Bottom line is that many of the issues that cause bad breath will build up and cause significant problems before long. That will put the cost up too, if you don't make that visit every half year or so and pay the bill. It's an investment worth making!

Remember, in most countries there are defined dental insurance programs available so that you can spread the cost, or at least keep a lid on it, so that might well be an investment that is worthwhile.

4. Chew Gum

It might have been a gimmick by marketing people to start with, but there have now been a number of studies to show the value of chewing gum in maintaining your dental health during the day.

Apart from the minty freshness that will help to mask bad breath, that's not the point.

In fact, the capability for chewing gum to keep your mouth clean by stimulating saliva flow, as a natural oral cleanser, as well as dislodging stuck bits of food is now well proven.

So, there you go. there are four easy dental health tips to ensure that any bad breath you might have had in the past is banished forever.

It wasn't that painful now, was it?

(c) 2007 Best Dental Health Guide. You're constantly worrying about how your breath smells yet it's so difficult to know for sure if it's smelling at all! It can be tempting to grab some mints or mouth spray but the problem is that they can actually make matters worse in the long run.

What Causes Bad Breath?

There's so much conflicting info out there as to how to effectively treat your bad breath. You may not realize it but many products designed to help actually dry out your mouth and are generally a waste of money. There are two likely reasons for having bad breath. First of all, when you body is digesting food, gasses are released. The smell of these gasses can vary depending on what foods you eat - onions and garlic are amongst the worst offenders.

Then there's bacteria lurking in your mouth, on your tongue and between your teeth. I am sure you have noticed that "not so fresh breath" on those mornings that you ran out the door before brushing.

Simple Remedies

Before you do anything else, make sure that you're cleaning you teeth thoroughly. Not just your teeth but also your gums and tongue. It's a good idea to invest in a tongue scraper so that the bacteria is fully removed. Another important thing to remember is your tooth brush. Bacteria from your mouth attaches to your brush so wash it well between brushing and replace often.

If you don't floss, then you must go out and buy some as tooth brushes have problems cleaning the gaps between your teeth.

Tea tree oil is an amazing essential oil with many wonderful health properties. Its anti-bacterial properties also make it a good mouthwash. Try adding a few drops to your toothpaste.

A little baking soda in water will also help to neutralize the bad breathe odor.

Ginger is well-known oriental treatment for bad breath. Its taken pickled in vinegar after a meal.

Last but by far the simplest is water. Mouths that are dry tend to have more odor, so drink lots of water to help keep things wet and flushed out.

April Kerr is passionate about healthy living and has written a blog post on how drinking tea can help with bad breath.

Home Remedy for Bad Breath - Get The Facts By Jason Sandlin

Bad breath is a problem that is shared by millions of people across the country, and is treatable, but you must attack the source. Bad breath is the common name for the medical condition known as halitosis, but whatever you call it, the phenomenon of bad breath is completely unmistakable and can be really embarrassing. Bad breath is caused by odor-producing bacteria that grow in the mouth. Persistent bad breath is usually caused by the smelly gases released by the bacteria that coat your teeth and gums.

There are just as many causes of bad breath as there are sources of bacteria in the mouth. Bad breath is caused, primarily by bacteria. Bad Breath bacteria live all through the mouth, throat and nasal areas, as well as the gums. The key to eliminating bad breath is killing the anaerobic bacteria and toxins that they secrete, which are the actual cause of bad breath. To start off with, you need to brush your teeth twice a day and after meals with toothpaste that kills bacteria and try using a mouthwash each time you brush. It’s just that the people with really bad breath, the bacteria are highly active.

The bacteria on our teeth and gums (plaque) also cause gum disease and dental decay, so we really need to get the bacteria under control before you have more things to worry about. One of the warning signs of gum disease is that you always have bad breath or a bad taste in your mouth.

Treatment for bad breath can vary and is usually quite a simple task to take care of. A home remedy for bad breath is really out there. You only need to find the source, and attack it. The most effective treatment for bad breath is to treat the cause, which is most of the time, bacteria. Sometimes it is necessary that you see a specialist to determine the most effective treatment.

Mouthwash only gets rid of bad breath temporarily. The only way to rid yourself of the beastly breath is to find its source. The most common cause is periodontal disease caused by the accumulation of dental plaque and the associated bacteria that collect on the plaque. Some of the most common thing that I hear about bad breath sufferers are: “I had my teeth cleaned Friday, but the bad breath was active again today” or “I clean my teeth and tongue three times a day and also use corodysil mouthwash twice daily and I still can’t get rid of it.” These are people that usually have bacteria in their mouth that is very active. Sometimes, though, there is a medical condition that is causing their bad breath.

Knowing how to cure your bad breath is very crucial in your hygiene. Thus, for someone suffering from this problem, learning how to cure your bad breath is a must. Sometimes the cause of bad breath is entirely out of your control if you have an underlying medical condition, but most times it is very treatable. Having a bad breath is like creating your own lonely space. It is embarrassing, socially impairing, and unpleasant. To keep your breath fresh, you must get rid of any gum disease, and keep your mouth clean and fresh. In order to do this, you need to find a home remedy for bad breath.

To learn more about how you can use a home remedy for bad breath, feel free to visit the Home Remedy for Bad Breath Report

Cure For Bad Breath - Natural Ways to Eliminate Bad Breath By Michael Lee

Want to know a cure for bad breath? Bad breath is not only a health problem, but a social one as well. It is an embarrassment for anyone to have. But should you be suffering from bad breath, rest assured that there are cures for bad breath that are safe, natural, and effective. Specific cures for bad breath depend on the cause.

What causes bad breath?

Bad breath is usually caused by bacteria in the mouth, particularly on the surface of the tongue. It can be caused by poor dental hygiene, mouth infections, dryness of the mouth, stress, and external factors like cigarettes, smoke and coffee, among others. Less common causes of bad breath are stomach and intestinal problems, respiratory tract infections, and major body illnesses like diabetes and liver diseases.

If you feel you have bad breath, your doctor or dentist may help you identify the cause. This is helpful especially if you have halitosis, or chronic bad breath.

How to cure bad breath

Conventional cures for bad breath are antiseptic mouthwashes and medications. However, some of the best remedies for bad breath can be found in nature or in your home.

Cure For Bad Breath # 1: Mint oil is in!
You see mint in almost every breath-freshening product but the most effective and potent of all to use is arguably the peppermint oil – yes, that essential oil usually used for aromatherapy. A drop of that pure essential oil on the tongue can freshen your breath quickly and naturally.

Also helpful is tea tree oil, a powerful antiseptic normally recommended for skin problems. As this oil is quite strong, just drop a very small amount on your toothbrush and brush your teeth with it.

Cure For Bad Breath # 2: Spice is nice. Seeds, too!
While some spices like pepper can make your mouth hot (and for some, smell unpleasant), a few like cloves actually have an antiseptic effect on the mouth and are a good remedy for bad breath. You can chew on cloves or grind them and prepare them as tea.

The seeds normally used as condiments like fennel and anise seeds are good breath sweeteners. Anise, in particular, has curative properties and kills odor-causing bacteria. Since these seeds are dry and can keep for quite some time, they are convenient to carry around with you. Simply chew on them after a meal.

Cure For Bad Breath # 3: Cool off with a lemon.
Not only is lemon good for lemonade and as a household cleaning agent, it is great natural cure for bad breath as well! Suck on a slice of lemon and feel your breath cleansed and freshened instantly.

Read Part 2 of this amazing cure for bad breath article by super self-improvement expert Michael Lee at http://www.20daypersuasion.com/cure-for-bad-breath2.htm to discover more bad breath remedy secrets.

How to Fight Bad Breath - Fighting Bad Breath By Achi Amaechi

Let's see your muscles. Well, there's no need for this when there are many bad breath home remedies available to choose from.

Bad breath is caused by the release of various sulphur compounds from the mouth, especially at the back of the tongue and the throat. Good bad breath home remedies need to cleanse the mouth of the foul bacteria and also reduce drying which only helps the smell to spread from the mouth.

Some Good Bad Breath Cures That You Can Try

Here are some good bad breath home remedies that I can recommend to help curb the embarrassing condition.

Baking soda -- mix one teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water and swish around the mouth. Make sure you gargle too then spit it out. Do this twice a day.

Eat better -- reduce the amount of meat in your diet and eat more vegetables, especially the organic variety. If you have too much protein in your diet, your breath will stink as people have found out when trying the latest diet fads.

Cardamom seeds -- these have a very aromatic fragrance and are great bad breath home remedies because they help to mask the smell.

Parsley seeds -- these are very rich in chlorophyll. Bad breath and chlorophyll are well known to be polar opposites. In fact, chlorophyll has been called "nature's own deodorant".

Lemon juice -- squeeze the juice of half a lemon into some water and take several mouthfuls and swish around your mouth. This is one of my favorite bad breath home remedies because it leaves my mouth tasting great and feeling fresh! I can highly recommend it.

I hope you found the above tips useful. Although chemical products can erase bad breath, the effect is usually only temporary. Bad breath home remedies are useful but sometimes not enough. Luckily, there are other unique 100% natural remedies that can kill your bad breath for life in just a few days. Read below to find out more.

Is your breath worse than the cat's? We were altogether five in number, and decided to head for the Rosal Park just down the street for a picnic. We had nursed this idea for a week now and selected the choicest of food (for so we thought) for ourselves. Just some moments later, I noticed an unbearable smell coming my direction from behind me. What's happening? I imagined, as I turned back, I saw my other friends discussing all with enthusiasm except for one - the main speaker trying to hide away his mouth. When we alighted from the jeep, there was a kind of isolation from this particular guy – I thought I was alone. Alas! My other friends have also noticed the bad smell almost oozing from this mouth! This is personal disgrace at its best!

He has bad breath, call it chronic if you like. Bad breath, chronic bad breathe or halitosis bad breath can cause you a lot of harm, interfere with your social and professional success. A lot of misinformation has been around for a while now concerning this disease. Bad breath can be caused by a number of reasons. Note that we are going A-Z on the causes of this success monster. First, we need to understand what bad breath means. Bad breath refers to a situation where the breath you exhale gives offensive odor. Surprisingly, most people living with bad breath have nit the faintest idea that they have one. The traditional breathing into your hand is just a myth, folks, it doesn't work! The primary cause for bad breathe, whether chronic or not is a bacterium that resides within the surface of the tongue and the throat.

This bacterium is called the anaerobic sulfur-producing bacteria. Actually, these bacteria are originally supposed to be there of r a purpose – they function to help digestion. They help to breakdown proteins found in some food. Under some condition, these bacteria begin to function at a very high rate. Since they breakdown proteins and proteins are made up of amino acid that are dense with sulfur (this sulfur exactly is what smells and causes the odor), they are said to cause bad breath. Other supporting causes are bad teeth and gums – if they are in poor condition, they can contribute to bad breath. Also, consumption regularly or in large quantities of garlic, onions, alcohol, hot peppers, aromatic spices e.t.c.

That's it on the causes of bad breath Visit http:// http://www.freshbreath4life.blogspot.com now! The majority of halitosis cases are caused by bacteria residing on the tongue, particularly at the back near the throat. Sometimes it is referred to as methane halitosis, but true bad breath consists of many chemicals, not just methane.

Fortunately, there are a number of bad breath treatments available.

The most common bad breath solution is a mouthwash used twice daily. A mouthwash with an alcohol base will kill more bacteria than its competitors. But, with this treatment, be sure to wash the mouth out well with water afterwards to prevent drying.

A tongue scraper can be a highly effective bad breath solution -- it's a piece of plastic allowing you to scrape the gunk off the back of your tongue but it also causes many people an uncomfortable gag reflex.

Brushing the teeth as normal, unfortunately, is not enough to prevent bad breath.

Some people have such a bad condition that they need professional help. They will visit clinics for a bad breath solution but the jury is out on these professionals and whether their treatments are worth the cost.

In some very extreme cases, rotting food on the tonsils requires special reshaping surgery to cure bad breath and, although a new technology, it seems to work well. Small holes in tonsils causing bad breath manage to do so because they trap food which rots over a period of days leading to putrid smells! Fortunately, chronic bad breath causes such as tonsil cavities are relatively rare.

Apart from extreme surgical measures and popular but underperforming advice, there are also other unique natural products which are highly effective bad breath solutions.

Is your breath worse than the dog's? McDonald

Do you suffer from chronic bad breath? Chronic halitosis (the medical term for bad breath) is a more than just the temporary halitosis odors caused by eating garlic or other pungent foods--the embarrassing condition stays with you long after the foods are swallowed and digested. Chronic bad breath can't be fixed by breath mints. As soon as the mint is gone, the halitosis returns. Chronic halitosis has a deeper cause and will require a little more effort. But it is very possible to cure chronic bad breath with some fairly simple remedies. Let's take a look at what causes chronic halitosis and what steps you can take to rid yourself of it quickly.

The build-up of bacteria and decaying food particles is almost always the culprit behind chronic bad breath. Your mouth is an excellent environment for bacteria--it's usually dark, warm and moist. Your tongue provides a rough surface for bacteria to grow and multiply on. If you have some plaque building up between your teeth, it also provides hand holds for bacteria and small bits of leftover food. As the bacteria thrives, it gives off odors that most people find unattractive. The best cures for chronic halitosis are cures that attack the bacterial growth in your mouth.

Now, you may be saying "Wait a minute, I brush my teeth all the time--why do I have chronic halitosis?" It's true, even though poor oral hygiene is the overwhelming top cause for chronic halitosis, there are other reasons by you might have a reputation for unkissability. Some people suffer from xerostomia, a chronically dry mouth. Dry mouth is often a side effect of medications, especially treatments for asthma and bronchitis. Having a dry mouth often leads to chronic bad breath. Other possible causes of chronic halitosis include some respiratory diseases and even diabetes.

The quickest and surest help for chronic halitosis is brushing and flossing along with cleaning your tongue. Many people tend to forget their tongue during their dental hygiene activities. Many new toothbrush designs are incorporating tongue cleaning tools, but it's also okay to just brush your tongue. Separate tongue cleaners are also available. In a pinch, you can use the edge of a spoon.

Saliva has been referred to by some as the greatest secret weapon against chronic halitosis. Adequate saliva helps to wash away food particles and bacteria. In addition to the physical cleansing action, saliva also has antibacterial properties. Chewing gum is an excellent way to promote the greater production of saliva in your mouth.

Recent studies have highlighted the surprising effectiveness of cinnamon in the battle against chronic bad breath. Of course you're probably well aware of the pleasing aroma of cinnamon. But this spice has also been found to have ingredients that help lower the levels of bacteria in your mouth. Combining the anti-bacterial properties of cinnamon with the saliva-promoting action of chewing gum will help rid you of chronic halitosis. Make sure you stick with sugar-free gum so you can avoid cavities.

Drinking water can have a positive effect on chronic bad breath. Sometimes you can get dehydrated without really feeling thirsty. So don't wait until you feel the need for water--drink it as a habit. This will help you avoid dehydration that could lower your saliva production. Drinking water also helps to flush away some bacteria and food particles.

If you're on a no-carb or low-carb diet, it could actually be contributing to chronic halitosis. Wouldn't that be ironic--losing weight to be attractive leads to chronic halitosis? When you burn fat on a big scale, your body produces ketones. And ketones in your blood can lead to a distinctive sort of bad breath. So, do yourself and your date a favor--have a few carbs to help your breath.

Everyone suffers from halitosis at one time or another. But chronic bad breath needs a little extra action. Since most chronic halitosis results from bacteria growth and decaying food particles, start by paying a little more attention to your oral hygiene. If that doesn't work pretty quickly, then you should see a dentist as soon as possible. Not only will your dentist be able to provide a thorough cleaning, he's also the right doctor to discuss other options if cleaning doesn't do the job.

When experiencing bad breath for a long duration of time, it is commonley known as chronic bad breath. Causes of bad breath are a result of anaerobic sulfur-producing bacteria in the mouth. Bad breath can cause you too much.

Before you show this concern trying to get rid of it, it must have cost you a lot. Just last week, I got to discuss with the speaker of a live-changing seminar I attended and Christ! It was all over!

Forgive me for this, but what must be done must be done. I had to reschedule another day with him. Bad breath is no respecter of persons, once you enable it with your diet and lifestyle, man, you get hampered social success as your guest.

Eliminating bad breath is one of the things you should consider on your road to success. Before elimination, we need first to understand its cause, how it gets there, what propels it and what steps can be taken to get rid of it. More of this information can be found at http:// www.freshbreath4life.blogspot.com . Now on elimination, it is not absolutely possible to get total rid of bad breath. Bad breath is caused by anaerobic sulfur producing bacteria that helps in the digestion (by means of breaking down) of proteins in some food. So it is unavoidably needed and advantageous. I will advice that you control it as a means of eliminating it, since simple tips I'll give you in a short while can prevent the odor.

Controlling here means disallowing these odor-causing bacteria to thrive in large quantities

You can minimize the amount of food available for these bacteria so they don't thrive in large quantities. More often than not, sulfur compounds that cause bad breath are created as waste product by this bacterium when they digest proteins. Make the environment on which this bacteria thrive unbearable!

You could also drink more water, chew less sugar gum and mints

Minimize greatly your intake of garlic, onions, alcohol, hot peppers and aromatic spices

Make sure your teeth and gums are in good condition as regular, competent dental care is important in controlling bad breath/breath odor

If you are on Atkins diet, the odds of getting bad breath are even greater. The reason being that carbohydrates are not readily available in your body so you start to use other fats and proteins as your source of energy, as a result, during the process of conversion, you get bad breath.

That's it on eliminating bad breath. You Can Cure Halitosis or Bad Breath Easily and Quickly By Peter Nisbet

It must be pretty awful to be afraid to kiss, and it is needless since you can cure halitosis or bad breath easily and quickly if you know what to do.

The agony of a guy being afraid when a girl comes close must be terrible, and for a girl too since women also suffer from bad breath. Kissing is a normal thing for teenagers, and for anyone in fact. To be afraid of a kiss must be awful.

Although you cannot smell your own breath, you will know that yours smells bad when people step back from you when you talk, or someone of the opposite sex flinches and turns away when you get close. You have to do something about it other than just brushing your teeth, and do it quick.

What Causes Halitosis?

This article with give you information on how to cure that problem, but first let’s have a look at what causes halitosis and dispel some myths. Halitosis is caused by evil smelling sulfur compounds that are products of the break-down of proteins by bacteria that live in your mouth. Although poor dental care can contribute, it is not the main reason. These bacteria are natural, and are meant to be in your mouth, but in some cases they start to work overtime and break down some proteins too fast, so generating these nasty volatile compounds.

Bacteria Live Deep in you Tongue and Cheeks

The bacteria are anaerobic, which means that they work best in the absence of oxygen, so do not live on the surface, but deep within the tongue, between the papillae or rough bumps on your tongue, in your cheeks and in your throat. That’s why brushing does not help much. They thrive in dry mouths, where the lack of oxygen-containing saliva creates ideal conditions for them. Dry mouths can be caused by some medications such as antihistamines and high blood pressure treatments and also by alcohol. Hence the ‘dog breath’ the morning after a heavy night!

High protein foods also cause halitosis, and the acidity of coffee speeds up the activity of the bacteria. A cheeseburger and coffee is probably worse before a date than eating onions! Sinus problems also create bad breath and it is next to impossible to eradicate after sinus surgery. So what can you do to cure your problem? It is, after all, a serious problem since it can affect your success in romance and also your employment prospects. No employer wants somebody with stinking breath talking to customers, so you have to do something, and do it quick. Luckily there is a cure for bad breath.

How to Cure Bad Breath

The cure lies in the fact that the bacteria are known to be anaerobic. They don’t like oxygen. It figures, therefore, that if you apply a substance that is rich in oxygen it will stop the little guys doing all that damage in your mouth. The compounds that you can smell are called Volatile Sulfur Compounds, or VSCs. If you can stop the bacteria from creating them then you have found the solution.

There are oxygen-rich compounds that can be used for this. If they are applied as a paste to the tongue and cheeks, and removed with a tongue scraper, they are very effective. The treatment can then be backed up by oxygenated mouthwashes and toothpastes to get down into the body of your tongue and cheeks. Brushing your tongue and cheeks with a soft toothbrush is also effective. These compounds can also break down the VSCs into odourless substances.

Once you have your bad breath under control, you can keep it controlled by keeping an eye on the proteins you eat. You don’t have to stop eating high protein foods such as cheese and fish, just be aware that you are eating them and then clean your tongue and cheeks afterwards. This stops any debris accumulating and being decomposed by the bacteria.

Ordinary Toothpaste is not Effective

An ordinary toothpaste in not good enough for this, but pastes are available containing high-oxygen materials. More details are available on my website of you want them, or you could try asking your pharmacist. You must be prepared, however, for an old-fashioned view of halitosis as being due to poor oral hygiene, which it definitely is not. It is a condition that some people have, that is caused by natural friendly bacteria, and certain medical or dietary conditions. In some cases it can be genetic.

Improved oral hygiene might help slightly by masking the problem, but will not cure it. A reduced alcohol intake is only a temporary cure if the condition is caused by excessive alcohol, but not if there is another cause. In that case, alcohol is simply making it worse rather than being the prime cause.

Do Not be Afraid to Kiss

Do not be afraid to kiss. You can cure bad breath or halitosis fairly easily if you go the right way about it. Don’t try to cure it in any other way other than attacking the bacteria with oxygen. You will not kill them since they are there all the time and will easily be regenerated after an antibacterial treatment such as a mouthwash. These bacteria are supposed to be there, because they assist humans in digestion by breaking down proteins found in specific foods, mucous or phlegm, blood, and in diseased or "broken-down" oral tissue. Under certain conditions, these bacteria start to break down proteins at a very high rate. Proteins are made up of Amino Acids. Two of the Amino Acids (Cysteine and Methionine) are dense with sulfur. When these "beneficial" bacteria come into contact with these compounds, the odorous and "lousy-tasting" sulfur compounds are released from the back of the tongue and throat, as Hydrogen Sulfide, Methyl Mercaptan, and other odorous and bad tasting compounds. These "problem" compounds are often referred to as volatile sulfur compounds (VSC), where volatile means Vaporous and Effervescent, two adjectives which accurately describe their ability to offend other people instantly.

Because my original degree is in Bacteriology, let me explain a very important fact about these "bugs". They are not "bad guys" - they are not infectious. Everyone in the world has the same group of bacteria in their mouth. You cannot "catch" bad breath from someone else - even by kissing. Since they are part of our normal oral flora, you cannot permanently remove them from your mouth - not by tongue scraping, not by antibiotics, and not by rinses which claim to "lift the bacteria off your tongue". The only scientifically proven and clinically effective method of halting Halitosis is by attacking the bacteria's ability to produce VSC and by converting the VSC into non-odorous and non-tasting organic salts. (I should know, I've personally treated nearly 10,000 people at my California Breath Clinics and I've helped thousands more through my TheraBreath formulas. Take a look at a small fraction of testimonial letters to see What Doesn't Work!

Speaking about bacteria, there is one other fact that you must understand about these bacteria. They are classified as "Anaerobic" - which literally means "Without Oxygen". They thrive in an environment where Oxygen is NOT present. That is why they DO NOT LIVE ON THE SURFACE OF YOUR TONGUE! They live in between the papillae (fibers) that make up your tongue!

These sulfur compounds are actually by-products of anaerobic bacteria (Fusobacterium and Actinomyces, among others). Everyone needs these bacteria, because they assist the digestion process. But, unfortunately, for some, as yet undetermined reason these particular bacteria are found in higher numbers in those anguished by Bad Breath. (Various theories attribute this to hormonal changes, a history of medications, usually antibiotics or sulfa drugs-which create an imbalance of oral bacteria, or even Genetics-these disorders appear to run in some families.) We do know however, that it seems to be evenly split between men and women.

Conditions under which the problem becomes worse:

Dry Mouth
Although some cases of dry mouth are naturally occurring, most cases are caused by one of these factors; prescription medications (usually prescribed for high blood pressure or depression) antihistamines, and adult beverages, with alcohol in them. (see "Why Regular Products Don't Work")

When your mouth is dryer, you have less Saliva. Saliva naturally contains Oxygen, which keeps your mouth healthy and fresh. These bacteria are anaerobic, which simply means that they will thrive and make more sulfur in the presence of little or no oxygen. Thus if you have less Saliva, you have less oxygen, thereby creating an anaerobic environment, perfect for the bacteria to produce more of these odorous and sour/bitter compounds. For people with Dry Mouth, products such as Saliva Stimulation Tablets can help greatly.

Post-Nasal Drip
We know that proteins contain amino acids, which in turn contain sulfur compounds (see text above). When a person has a post nasal drip, mucus drains and coats the back of the tongue and throat, exactly where bacteria live (see diagram above). Since mucus is made up of interlinked strands of protein, the bacteria have a field day, breaking down these proteins into odorous and sour tasting sulfur type compounds. Strong Antihistamines don't help, because the drying effect of the antihistamines also creates a problem. The only method of ending the odor and taste are to use Oxyd-VIII based oral products. Many of my patients with post nasal drip have claimed great success with use of the Nasal-Sinus Drops.

What About The Sinuses?
After personally treating nearly 9,000 people worldwide, I have yet to see a patient get rid of his bad breath following sinus surgery. First of all, these anaerobic bacteria cannot live in the sinuses. When someone has a sinus infection, one of the common symptoms are intense sinus headaches, caused by the pressure from the infection in the sinus. If you don't have these powerful headaches, you probably don't have a sinus problem. The fact is that once someone has an elevated amount of these anaerobic bacteria, they will create the problem from any protein source, including mucous, phlegm, etc, which drain down the back of your throat into the area where these bacteria live.

High Protein Foods
These bacteria love those proteins, and certain foods are packed with them:

Milk and Cheese and most other dairy products. (The fat content does not matter.) If you are lactose intolerant, do not eat or drink these products! Since your system cannot digest them properly, they are available to the bacteria for an extended period of time. A recent research article from the Los Angeles Times (November 1996) on lactose intolerance showed that nearly 67% of all Americans can be classified as "Lactose Intolerant". This is due to the fact that in a diverse population such as we have here, there is a predilection for Asians, Hispanics, and African-Americans to be lactose intolerant.

Fish are high in proteins. As many people eat a high fish diet, logically they make the problem worse.

Coffee with caffeine (and even without) contains high levels of acids which cause the bacteria to reproduce more rapidly and create a bitter taste for many people. (Virtually any acidic type of food will do this.)

Coffee drinking was one of the problems that my patients used to have. After starting my treatment, they have been able to go back to coffee drinking (in moderation of course) without any bitter tastes afterward.

What Works?
Oxyd-VIII is the active ingredient in TheraBreath products. It prevents the anaerobic bacteria from creating the odorous sulfide and Mercaptan compounds by "adding oxygen" to the environment. The end result is the formation of a "Sulfate", which has no odor or taste. Most of my patients start out with a Starter Kit and work their way up from there if necessary.

by Dr. Harold Katz, Founder of The California Breath Clinics

You can find more articles about halitosis topics and various curative systems I have developed at my website, http://www.therabreath.com

The Best Bad Breath Remedy By Tim Shank

Has someone ever told you that you have bad breath? I don't know about you but I am pretty paranoid about the fact that I might be offending people when I speak. Sure you can use things such as chewing gum or mints to help to make your breath appear fresh, but these things are merely treating the symptom (bad breath) and not the cause. But what it is that causes bad breath, and what is the best bad breath remedy?

Bad breath is caused by a number of different things. The most common thing that could cause bad breath is bacteria in your mouth, most commonly on the tongue. The bacteria collects on the tongue (sometimes it is even shows signs of itself visibly) and emanates an odor. It could also be caused by gum disease or perhaps even could come from your nostrils. Things such as sinus infections could cause a foul odor to come out of your nostrils, and while this smells different than common bad breath they can be indistinguishable from one another, and no breath mint is going to help.

So what is the best bad breath remedy? Well, that depends on the condition that is causing your bad breath in the first place. There is almost an unlimited number of things that you can purchase at the store to try to cover over the problem, but you would be doing just that, covering over the problem and not curing it. The best bad breath remedy is one that will not only correct the odor but will heal the problem naturally, and there are some fantastic natural cures out there, just find the one that is right for you.

If you are tired of treating the bad breath symptoms without curing the disease then visit us online for our special report on natural bad breath relief. For most people it is because they ate something strong and the smell has lingered, but for others the problem becomes chronic. If you suffer from bad breath there are some things that you can do to try to get rid of it, but what you are usually doing is treating the symptom and not curing the disease. As soon as you stop the treatment the bad breath will return. So what is the bad breath cause and how can we cure it?

Bad breath, or halitosis, is caused by a number of different things. Generally it is caused by a buildup of bacteria in the mouth that emits an odor. This buildup can generally be found on the tongue. It could also be that we have a problem with out gums or teeth that is causing the problem. Bad breath may not be coming from our mouth, it could be coming from our nose if we have a sinus infection, and no mint will help with that. One other bad breath cause that is more serious but less likely is that it is being caused by a condition with the liver or other organ of the body.

Don't spend all your time sucking on a breath mint. Sure this will help to cover over the odor but the underlying cause will still be there. You should try a natural bad breath remedy that will not only mask the symptoms but will attack the cause. There are several natural bad breath remedies on the market that can help.

If you are tired of treating the bad breath symptoms without curing the disease then visit us online for our special report on natural bad breath relief. Serious medical conditions require intervention by your dental physician.

After visiting your dentist, if he cannot find a medical explanation for a persistent case of bad breath, consider trying some of the remedies we present.

De-Mystifying the Mouthwash Myth

As we mentioned earlier, all people have bad breath on occasion. When they do, most people immediately reach for the mouthwash. Not only is this ineffective but this action can also exacerbate the condition. Why is this so?

Mouthwash contains flavoring and dyes but most importantly the primary component is alcohol! They claim to kill bacteria, which is true in most cases. However, the bacteria is quick to return with an exponential affect because the alcoholic content causes dry mouth which is the leading cause of bad breath. It creates a very ineffectual cycle of repetition.

Commercial mouthwash products also contain other harsh chemicals. Studies have shown that excessive amounts of mouthwash irritate the gums, tongue, palate and mucous membranes in the mouth. If the user is a smoker AND consumes alcohol, heavy use of mouthwash can even cause certain cancers. It would be prudent to look at some of the other methods to deal with bad breath and stay away from the mouthwash.

If you would like to freshen your breath try preparing your own breath freshening mouthwash. A rinse consisting of a few drops of peppermint oil in a glass of water will do the trick nicely just don’t count on it to kill bacteria. Also just use it as a rinse and do not swallow. There are other essential oils that work as well. Try tea tree, myrrh, spearmint, and ginger are also effective. Rinsing your mouth with salt water is a great home remedy for a sore throat. It is also good for eliminating bad breath. You might also try rinsing with lemon or lime water as well. Both are equally effective and may taste a bit more pleasant than salt water.

Try drinking a small amount of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water at least once a day. Banish the breath mints and chewing gum.

Neither of these commercial products are particularly helpful as they only mask the problem and in fact could cause tooth decay. Try some of our alternative recommendations:

Remember the trick the Greeks used? Anise seed is readily available and chewing on a few of them work just as effectively today as they did several thousand years ago. Fennel, cinnamon and cloves also work well. Try popping a few into your mouth after meals to fight bad breath.

There are many other natural replacements for commercial mouthwash. Try adding a bit of baking soda to your toothpaste. After all, not only is it used in cooking and the laundry, we also use baking soda to absorb odor in the refrigerator. It will work well to help eliminate bad breath.

Did you ever wonder why parsley and mint are often used as a garnish when dining out? Just like the Greeks, remember the Romans. Chewing on parsley helps fight bad breath.

The reason is the high content of chlorophyll. Chlorophyll very quickly changes carbon dioxide into oxygen in the body. This prepares the digestive tract to prevent gases and toxins from backing up and by lubricating the tract and various valves.

Boil a mixture of myrrh resin, sage leaves and lavender flowers in a small amount of water. Gargle three times a day as a bad breath remedy.

Aloe vera will cleanse the colon and prevent toxins that could possibly back up in the digestive tract.

Getting to the “root” of the bad breath problem.

Poor dental hygiene is a major factor for the cause of bad breath. Yes, you’ve heard it before, brush and floss after every meal and make regularly trips to your dentist for cleaning and examination. But, how many of us actually follow this regimen. Not enough, according to the American Dental Association. They report that periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in the United States. Periodontal disease actually takes place in two different stages.

Gingivitis is the first stage and only affects the gums. Gingivitis IS reversible if caught before it moves into the second stage called periodontitis. Periodontal disease is irreversible, causing tooth loss and potential bone damage.

We have discussed the leading cause of bad breath in a previous chapter. Many of the same causes apply to the risk factors for periodontal disease such as tobacco and certain drugs. But there are other factors for periodontal disease which can also manifest as bad breath. Some of these additional risk factors are:

· Ill fitting dentures or bridges
· Teeth that are crooked
· Old fillings that no longer fit their cavity
· Pregnancy

The symptoms of encroaching periodontal disease also closely mimic some of the same symptoms of bad breath, with bad breath actually becoming symptomatic with periodontal disease. Some of these not previously mentioned are:

· Bleeding gums
· Teeth that are loose
· Gums that are swollen and tender
· Changes in the bite
· Gums that are receding away from the teeth
· Changes in prosthetic dentures

Periodontal disease is nothing more than plaque. While it may sound harmless, quite the opposite is true. The buildup of this plaque also causes bad breath. Get rid of the plaque and you will eliminate the bad breath and reap the benefits of healthy gums.

Plaque is the carrier for that sulfur producing bacteria that we discussed earlier. It creates a sticky film that is always present in your mouth. When you eat or drink you add to the buildup of plaque. Plaque is a pesky creature that is also a bit shy. He likes to burrow in and hide just beneath the gum line where he develops a breeding ground for more of his bacterial friends. You can smell them, but it can be difficult to even know that plaque is hiding away and doing its damage.

This is why regular brushing and flossing is so important. You need to ferret out the problem and deal with it. It’s an ongoing process and you’ll NEVER be rid of it as long as you like to eat, drink and oh yes, live! You must brush at least twice a day to remove all traces of bits of food and plaque. Don’t forget to brush the gums as well!

Yes, you should brush after every meal, but if it isn’t possible and you don’t wish to brush after having a meal out at a restaurant, excuse yourself, visit the restroom and at least rinse your mouth well. This practice will go a long way toward healthy gums as well as reducing bad breath resulting from the bacteria remaining in the small bits of food.

You must floss every day taking care to reach every hidden scrap between the teeth. Brush your tongue daily. Ugh! A nasty tongue has to be one of the worse offenders for bad breath. Did you know that the ancient Romans brushed their tongues daily? Amazing, isn’t it, how some practices come full circle.

Using your soft bristled brush, brush the tongue gently, taking care not to gag yourself. Do try and reach as far back as comfortable to remove as much of the offending buildup as you can. It’s in that region toward the back of the tongue that produces the majority of the bad breath.

*******************************************************************

Gaetane Ross is a Certified Natural Health Consultant who has spent over 4 years focusing on Nutrition and Health. Sufendi

Did you know that bad breath can be a sign of a serious problem?

The term bad breath or halitosis originates from the latin language which means Halitus (breath) and Osis which means situation. Literally, it translates as having bad breath.

Almost 90 percent of bad breath is caused by sulphur-producing bacteria that lived in the rear of the mouth. Most of the time, this is linked with the lack of cleanliness of the mouth, apart from hollow teeth, gum infection and Xerostomia.

Xerostomia has special characteristics such as having a dry mouth, thick saliva and often feeling thirsty and the need to 'wet' the throat. Generally, Xerostomia is caused by dehydration, stress, using mouthwash that contains alcohol, old age, radiotherapy and certain medicines such as anti-depressants.

Illnesses or more serious complications could also cause bad breath. For example, changes in the hormone, indigestion, sinus, tonsils infection, even cancer, diabetes, chronic bronchitis as well as heart and kidney problems.

Chronic heart problems can be detected through one's bad breath. Usually, the breath will smell like acid or metal and unlike normal. Whereas, when breath smells like ammonia, it can be certain that the person suffers from a kidney problem because of the high level of ureum in the blood.

The strong and pungent smell of ammonia is a result of a chemical process. These compounds then enters the respiratory system, so as to cause bad breath.

If even after brushing teeth the breath still smells bad, then it is not caused from cavity in the mouth, but from the digestion system. Do you experience the difficulty of removing your bowels? Then it's constipation that causes bad breath.

This process, by which germs in the intestines metabolises against built-up food leftovers in the large intestine and cannot be distributed as it should be. From the resulting pile-up, gases are produced which gives off a foul smell. Not only that, the process of consuming food to removal through excretion requires 14 hours. Anything more than that, if not excreted or removed, then it will change to poison which later will be absorbed again through the blood system.

When possible, try for the time being, to avoid food that could trigger bad breath like fish, meat, dairy products, spicy food, shallots, garlic, coffee and anything sweet. However, if you cannot help it, drink lots of plain water so that the smell can be protracted and is excreted through urine.

Chew a sprig of parsley or mint before and after a meal to get rid of after-meal bad breath.

For added measure, brush your tongue and the back of it plus use a tongue scraper if required.

If the cause of bad breath is from the digestion system, you can consume some medication, which can clean all wastes that clung and remain in the large intestine, so that the condition returns to normal.

How about a tonsil infection?

The tonsils that are infected, especially if it is acute, indeed could cause bad breath. The infection is caused by Streptococcus Hemolyticus germs which have unique typical characteristics. If you often feel pain in the lower waist area and back, rheumatism and the constant pounding of the heart, then bad breath is caused by an infected tonsil. Also, these germs at the same time tries to attack the kidney, the heart and the nerves.

The tonsils formed are small but are part of a network of limfoids that produces the lymphocytes cell (one of the white blood cells types) that plays a role in producing Imunoglobulin A.; which is one of the defence systems in the body.

When the tonsils trigger bad breath, it can be overcome by consuming HPA products like Spirulina, Herb Tea and Honey as well as Lamandel.

Do check to see if some medicine you are consuming are causing bad breath and ultimately, do check if your bad breath is caused by the problems mentioned which can be serious and seek proper treatment.

Now, you can get rid of bad breath too. By Jenny Wilson

For most of us, having bad breath is something we dread. We would hate to think that people did not want to get close to us because of it. And if you have chronic bad breath then you will really understand what I am saying. That is why many people now use Palorin. It seems to be the savior that chronic sufferers need.

I personally know this because I have tried so many other alternatives to alleviate my own bad breath problem. I started with just brushing my teeth constantly but we know this is just not achievable when you are at work. I also was chewing gum but again this is not always acceptable in the working environment that I am in. No body wants to be greeted by someone chewing like a cow. Mouthwash was also hard to use because I would have to find somewhere to spit it out.

Many of you may be asking why I did not go to the doctor and or dentist to see what the problem was. Well, I did. The dentist did do some work on my teeth but this did not alleviate the problem so off I went to the doctor. He could not find anything dramatically wrong with me but he did say that I am one of the unfortunate ones who suffer from Halitosis, which in turn leads to very bad breath.

He gave me some tips to help fight these bacteria that was the cause of my concern but still was not really helping me. I then did a google search as we computer nerds do and came up with something that I thought I would try. And I am glad I did because so far so good.

Palorin comes in a tablet form, which I thought was good as it made it easy to use. Although you do have to have it 3 times a day with food. This can be a bother, as like most of us working people we do not always have time to eat regularly. The other thing that helped me over the line was that it was homeopathic so I gave it a go.

Obviously this product is expensive compared to chewing gum or using a mouth wash but it does work for me so that makes it worth it. I do buy the tablets in bulk so it works out cheaper but it is still not something that everyone can afford. I also found that whilst some of the ads for this Palorin say it works instantly, I found that it did not work straight away for me but in about a week it was working really well. Lucky I have a great partner who was able to tell me this!

Dramatically stop your bad breath problem with Palorin. There are many contributing factors to halitosis, or bad breath and most are not serious, usually arising from the growth of oral bacteria.

Oral hygiene does in fact contribute to the majority of malodorous conditions in the mouth. Eating certain kinds of foods including garlic, onion and curry are notorious for causing bad breath. These foods, after circulating through the bloodstream, exit the body through the lungs and eventually the mouth. They tasted good deal better going down and they do coming up.

Also any condition which causes the drying of the mouth will contribute to bad breath. Saliva is a natural digestive enzyme. Anything that inhibits saliva production will create a fertile breeding ground for the bacteria that reside on the back of your teeth and tongue. These bacteria, found in plaque, produce a sulfur compound which most people tend to find unpleasant.

Conditions which contribute to the drying of saliva include many medications, especially diuretics, antihistamines, antidepressants and many of the new drugs that are blasted all over the television. Check the contraindications on any medication you are considering purchasing to see if one of its side effects is dry mouth.

Another condition contributing to dry mouth and the resultant halitosis is age. As we get older, we seem to produce less saliva, enabling the bacteria to grow and the breath of many seniors to become less fresh.

Improved oral hygiene will eliminate most bad breath. Dentists recommend brushing after every meal for a minimum of three minutes and of course, flossing at least daily. It's also recommended that you purchase a new toothbrush every three or four months.

One can also eliminate normal bad breath by increasing your fluid intake, and rinsing your mouth after eating any dairy product fish product or meat product. The added consumption of fibrous vegetables is also recommended.

It's also important to clean your tongue. This can be done with a toothbrush or a tongue scraper. Mouthwash will work as well.

So far we've discussed only normal, average every day bad breath, not chronic bad breath. It's estimated however that a percentage of bad breath is caused by more serious dental conditions, such as gum disease. If you're experiencing chronic bad breath, and the cause is gum disease, it will not be getting any better without intervention from a dentist. The sooner you visit a dentist, the sooner the problem will be eliminated.Your dentist has many options for elimentating malodorous gum disease.

Chronic bad breath isn't always produced in the mouth though. Chronic bad breath could also be a symptom of a larger medical condition. Indigestion, heartburn, acid reflux, lactose intolerance, food allergies may all contribute to producing that unpleasant odor in your mouth.

My advice is to attend to basic and appropriate oral hygiene as a first-line of defense. If you do not believe the problems to be dental, or dietary, a trip to your physician is your next step, for chronic bad breath may affect more than just your social life it may be an alarm bell which if not answered will impact your health and very life as well.

Jeff Wise is neither a physician, nor a scientist. Most people with bad breath are not aware of their problem but the people around them certainly know and just embarrass to tell them. The reaction of people around you when you speak or open your mouth will somehow give you a hint if you have a bad breath problem. However, there are tests for bad breath that you can do, one test is lick the back of your wrist and let it dry for a minute or two and then smell it. Another way is to scrape the back of your tongue with an inverted spoon and smell the thick whitish dried residue. How it smells is most likely the way your breath smells to others. If you have a bad breath it is important to know how to fight bad breath.

To know how to fight bad breath, first you have to know the causes of bad breath. Bad breath is caused by accumulation of bacteria in the mouth. There are more than 600 types of bacteria present in the mouth which has the tendency to overpopulate due to food debris and other factors like gum problems and tooth decay. Accumulation of anaerobic bacteria on the posterior of the tongue, gums and teeth when mixed with mouth air and exhaled create foul odor or bad breath. There are two types of bad breath namely transient and chronic bad breath. Transient bad breath is caused by poor mouth hygiene, oral dryness or by eating certain foods like onion and garlic. Transient bad breath usually disappears on its own or by improved oral hygiene. Chronic bad breath is more serious and caused by continuous accumulation of bacteria and needs specialized treatment. It is important to know how to fight bad breath even before it becomes chronic bad breath.

Learn how to fight bad breath before it becomes a social stigma or before it affects your relationship with people. Number one on how to fight bad breath is proper oral hygiene. Brush your teeth religiously every morning and after every meal including your tongue where bacteria are more likely to accumulate. Be careful with what you eat, there are foods that causes bad breath like onions and garlic. Drink a lot of water, proper hydration prevents bad breath and accumulation of bacteria. Have a dental check up every 6 months to avoid tooth decay.

Proper oral hygiene alone sometimes doesn’t work on people with chronic bad breath. If you happen to follow all the oral hygiene mentioned and after bad breath testing you believe that you still have a bad breath or someone told you that you do have a bad breath, you should act on this at once before it could affect your social life. Finding how to fight bad breath and get rid of bad breath for good is something you should not ignore. It’s better to act on this now than suffer the effects of bad breath in your life.

How to fight bad breath? There are brand new products coming to market utilizing breakthrough technology that, when used regularly, can stop bad breath and keep it from ever coming back. Sound too good to be true? It's not! Read on and find out how it’s done.

Where Does the Smell Come From?

To understand why this new cure for bad breath works, you first have to know where breath odors come from. It has been shown that 90-95% of all bad breath is caused by bacteria (germs) that live in the mouth. These bacteria, which cause the foul odors as well as periodontal diseases, are called Gram-negative anaerobic bacteria. The bacilli are commonly found in mucous membranes throughout the body, and are often involved in infections. They are also normally antibiotic resistant. In the mouth, they reside all over, including on and between the teeth as well as on the tongue, especially in the back.

These bacteria attract amino acids, both those that exist in your saliva as well as those from the foods that we all eat. As a by-product, the amino acids emit sulfur gases such as dimethyl sulfide and hydrogen sulfide. Anyone who has smelled sulfur gases understand that they do not smell very pleasant. When the gases emitted by the amino acids are exhaled, we now have halitosis.

Better Understanding the Problem

We are talking about a problem that most people suffer from, if only just occasionally. It is known that having a dry mouth can actually worsen bad mouth odors since there is less to flush away the odor creating substances from the mouth. In a small percentage of cases (under 10%), mouth odor problems are due to various systemic diseases or infections. <

If you are wondering if you suffer from bad breath, be aware that it is almost impossible to smell your own breath. Also, most people are too embarrassed to tell you that you have a problem, unless you come right out and ask them.

Traditional Treatments

Traditional breath treatments have included covering up the odors by using mouthwash, chewing gum or lozenges; the use of oxidizing products that actually eliminate orders, but only for a short period of time after using them; brushing and flossing several times a day; and using antibacterial products that kill bacteria but do nothing to remove existing odors. All of these treatments may be effective in some people, but without eliminating both the odors and their root cause, these treatments are all very temporary, lasting from a few minutes to a couple of hours at best.

Finally, a Breakthrough CURE for Halitosis

Just recently at the State University of New York, Stonybrook, a leading dental university, doctors have perfected an amazing treatment process that, when followed, all but eliminates halitosis in nearly all people.

The doctors have discovered that the use of Zinc ion technology will prohibit amino acids from binding to the problem bacteria in your mouth. Without the protein to digest, the bacteria will stop producing the volatile sulfur gases, thus eliminating new odors from forming. The additional use of an oxidizing agent, typically sodium chlorite or stabilized chlorine dioxide, will eliminate all the existing offensive odors from the mouth. Through clinical studies it has been found that by using a combination of these two treatments just twice a day, halitosis can be eliminated for a full 24 hour period. It was also determined that as you continue the treatment, the oxidative state of your mouth will increase, and the possibility of future odor problems will lessen dramatically. Finally, a treatment that targets both the odors as well as their cause!

So How Do You Get This Treatment?

While I am sure that you will begin to see various companies releasing products into the marketplace, currently there is only one company manufacturing products using this new technology, Triumph Pharmaceuticals Inc., under the brand name SmartMouth®. The good news is that their products are currently available, without a prescription, at stores everywhere. If you are suffering from chronic bad breath, or know somebody that is, you owe it to yourself to check out this miracle breakthrough in halitosis treatment.

Randall Thomas is a recently cured long term sufferer of chronic halitosis and is the editor of a very popular information website for helping bad breath sufferers. Drysdale

Many people have made the observation that curing bad breath permanently is frustratingly difficult. Even when halitosis sufferers find a product or lifestyle that effectively controls breath odor, the problem seems to recur immediately if the control measures are stopped. As with many things in health and medicine, attempts to find a permanent cure are hampered by a lack of understanding of what causes halitosis at the most basic level.

We know that the reason for bad breath is usually the proliferation of anaerobic bacteria (bacteria that grow in the absence of oxygen) in the mouth - particularly in the little crevices on the back of the tongue, but also in other creases and crevices such as the spaces between the teeth and in pockets between the teeth and gums. The offending bacteria break down proteins and give of volatile sulfur compounds as a byproduct. Volatile sulfur compounds smell awful. This much we know: what we don't know, in many cases, is why the anaerobes proliferate to begin with, and curing bad breath depends on understanding that process.

In some cases, the reason for bad breath is obvious. Dental decay, gum disease, plaque buildup on the teeth, and other inflammatory conditions of the mouth are obvious causes - in these situations, the conditions are right for bacteria to multiply as they live off unhealthy and dead tissue. Sinus conditions, post nasal drip and inflammation in the throat or lungs are less obvious sources of trouble. For these conditions, curing bad breath depends on clearing up the inflammatory condition - often a lengthy and expensive process if it is possible at all.

In many cases of chronic halitosis, the reason for bad breath is much harder to pinpoint. Lots of healthy people with healthy mouths and no underlying medical problems have problems with breath odor. Where there is no underlying condition, curing bad breath often means merely controlling it on an ongoing basis. Typically, this requires using a product that will mask, reduce, or eliminate the odor temporarily. Numerous commercial products are available, forming a multimillion dollar industry in developed countries.

Recently, some interesting suggestions have been made with respect to life style and curing bad breath. Could a poor diet and lack of exercise contribute to the proliferation of unhealthy bacteria in the mouth? At a time when we're discovering that diet and exercise play an important role in many diseases, it's not too surprising to hear this may be the reason for bad breath as well. Adequate B Vitamins, Vitamin C, and zinc are all thought to be important, as well as a diet that contains lots of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Fortunately, these dietary nutrients, combined with regular exercise, are the same ones recommended for good health in other respects. In cases where the cause of bad breath is a mystery, a life style change might well be helpful.

Every individual case is different - to uncover the reason for bad breath in your case, consult your doctor and/or dentist, and discuss treatment options.

R. Not only that, but it is extremely offensive to others.

If you suffer from bad breath the signs should be obvious to you, even if you cannot smell your own breath. Have you ever noticed anyone taking a step or two back from you when your are speaking? Have you ever tried to kiss a girl or a boy, and noticed them reluctant? This may not be due to them not liking you, but more to the smell of your breath.

Halitosis can be extremely damaging both to your opportunity for romance, and for employment in a position that involves speaking to others. The problem with bad breath is that if you have it, you don’t know it unless somebody tells you. You can’t smell it yourself and your friends are not doing you a favour by not mentioning it. However, how do tell a friend that they have bad breath? Have you every tried it? It’s even more difficult than telling them they have body odour.

Let’s assume that you have cottoned on the fact that people tend to stand well back when you talk to them. That in itself may not always be a clue, but if they are standing close to you when you open your mouth, then take a few paces back, you should realize that it is not just to able to see you better. It’s because your breath stinks. That’s right – it stinks! There’s no other word for it, so do something about it.

Before you can sure that you are able to eliminate it you need to understand the cause. Cleaning your teeth won’t stop bad breath. It will help, but not stop it. I deliberately do not use the word ‘cure’, since bad breath is rarely a medical condition. It may be sometimes, but generally is a matter of oral hygiene. Note the word ‘oral’. Not ‘dental’ but ‘oral’. This is because halitosis arises from the mouth and throat, not the teeth – unless yours are rotten, in which case it can contribute.

Bad breath comes from bacteria that are lodged in your gums, tongue and cheeks. There are several types of such bacteria, but all emit gases that produce the bad breath that everybody can smell when you talk. These gases are normally sulfur compounds, and the bacteria that produce them are very difficult to dislodge. Mouthwashes are not always effective against them, since they need physically removed.

Vigorous brushing of the teeth will remove bacteria from the spaces between them, but gums, cheeks and your tongue also need brushing. Your tongue is best cleaned using a tongue scraper, which is a ribbed spatula that you pull down over your tongue, preferably coated with a paste containing anti-bacteriological ingredients. Two or three pulls down your tongue will be enough to clean it.

The same applies to your cheeks, though a soft toothbrush will do. Soft brushing with anti-bacteriological paste will clean your cheeks, and you can also use the soft brush on your tongue. A mouthwash can help if it is not too alkaline, since bacteria can take up residence at the back of the tongue, and farther down.

If you have halitosis or bad breath – there is no difference – good oral hygiene will help. However, if you use properly formulated anti-bacteriological pastes on a spatula designed to scrape your tongues and cheeks, you will not find it difficult to cure your halitosis problem. If you are unsure how to cure bad breath try it out and you will be delighted with the results. No longer will your girlfriend or boyfriend draw away from you when you try kissing them.

Peter is interested in many aspects of personal fitness and health, and you can find more information on this anti-social condition called halitosis, or bad breath, on his webpage http://www.welshhealth.com/oral/halitosis.html

This condition is easily controllable given the proper treatment and advice. A person suffering from bad breath can often become a subject of ridicule. Hence it is very important to get rid of this problem. There are several products in the market ranging from toothpastes to mouth fresheners, but they can only provide temporary relief to the problem. Ayurveda has the potential to solve the problem from its roots.

The mouth is the place of the kapha dosha. Hence an imbalance in the kapha dosha of the person manifests itself in the form of bad breath. In order to treat the problem of bad odor forever, a person will need to keep his/her kapha in the proper balance. In most instances, oral hygiene is spoken along with dental hygiene. Hence most treatments that are beneficial for the teeth are also beneficial for keeping mouth odors at bay.

In an indirect way, even the pitta dosha is responsible. When the agni (digestive fire) of the pitta dosha is vitiated, then the person would have an improper digestion. This would lead to bad breath emanating from the mouth.

When a person has bad breath, what is actually happening is that bacteria are living in the mouth, which are decomposing the residues of the food and releasing sulfur. The bad breath is a result of this liberation of sulfur. The regions in which the bacteria live could be in the interspaces between the teeth, in the cavities of the teeth or on the tongue. In extreme cases, there could be pus formation in the gums (scurvy like conditions due to deficiency of vitamin C). This could cause severe offensive odor and the person could well become a social outcast.

Let us check out the various methods available in Ayurveda to treat the problem of bad odor.

(1) Useful Herbs in the Treatment of Bad Breath

® Babul (Acacia arabica)

The babul is actually useful for the treatment of teeth cavities. Strong teeth means less cavities; and this will mean no bad breath. Simply chewing on the fresh bark of the babul tree will make the teeth stronger and arrest any bad breath that is emanating from them.

® Banyan (Ficus bengalensis)

If the aerial roots of the banyan are used to rub on the teeth (much as a toothbrush does), then the bacteria on the teeth would be killed. This would reduce the bad breath to a great extent.

® Clove (Syzygium aromaticum)

Again, clove is actually used for dental treatment. Clove is perhaps the most commonly used herb in dental treatments; it is one of the chief ingredients of many toothpastes. But due to its pungent taste, it can also cure the kapha vitiation which will eventually fight the bad breath.

® Holy Basil (Ocimum sanctum)

Chewing a few leaves of the holy basil will treat all kinds of mouth infections. Thus bad breath will become a thing of the past.

® Pepper (Piper nigrum)

Pepper is considered to be a very excellent agent in treating foul breath. A poultice of pepper is made with rock salt and rubbed on the teeth. When this is done on a daily basis, almost all kinds of oral and dental problems will be brought under control.

® Sandalwood (Santalum album)

Sandalwood is a very effective herb in the vitiation of the pitta dosha that can bring about improvement of the gum health.

(2) Dietary Treatments for Bad Breath

® The first important thing with halitosis is to check is whether the digestion is going on properly or not. Reduce the consumption of all foods that are difficult to digest. Include more fruits and green leafy vegetables in the diet as they can aid digestion.

® Flavor your food with spices such as cardamom and clove. These will help to combat the bacteria developed in the oral cavity.

® Drink lots of water and citrus fruit juices during the day.

® Gargle your mouth after everything you eat. Vigorous gargling is required to remove the food particles accumulated in the interspaces of the teeth or their cavities. If gargling is not enough, brush and floss.

® Do not leave residues of chocolates and sugary foods in the mouth. Wash the mouth immediately after eating such things.

(3) Ayurvedic Treatments for Bad Breath

Tablets of Khadiradi, Eladi and Lavangadi can be chewed about three to four times a day. This refreshes the mouth repeatedly and also has an astringent effect on the bacteria in the mouth.

(4) Home Medications

® The teeth and gums must be massaged with a mixture of honey and fine charcoal powder once a day.

® Keep the peel of a single pomegranate in the shade and let it dry completely. Do not keep it in direct sunlight or it will dry out the vitamins. Grind the dried peel to a fine powder. Put three grams of the powder in a glass of water and boil it. Gargle with this water. Repeat this for about a month.

® Dried coriander when chewed reduces the foul odor from the mouth. This is a good method to reduce the bad breath due to garlic and onion.

Read More on Treatments by Ayurveda and Home Remedies at http://www.ayushveda.com

Read more about Ayurveda at World's Largest Portal on Ayurveda and Ayurvedic Remedies. - The Free Ayurvedic Encyclopedia

Bad Breath By Lin Macgregor

Bad breath (halitosis) is a common and universal problem that can lead to significant embarrassment.

The commonest causes of bad breath are poor oral hygiene and gum disease.

Plaque is a mixture of bacteria, food residues and dead cells that forms between the gum and the tooth. The bacteria here create the unpleasant smell. If plaque is not removed regularly it contributes to bleeding gums and eventually loosening of the teeth.

If you do not practice good oral hygiene you will experience bad breath. A coated furry tongue is often a sign of indigestion, smoking or dehydration, all of which can add to the problems of bad breath.

Breath only smells when certain aromatic chemicals are dissolved in it. These include methyl mercaptan, hydrogen sulphide and putrescine. Some of these may be absorbed from the bowel into the bloodstream and then circulated around the body until they are excreted via the lungs in the breath. Not a pleasant thought!

Many people find their breath smells bad on waking up in the morning. This is normal and happens because the mouth dries up overnight and the flow of saliva that washes away food particles slows down when we sleep. Having breakfast starts the flow of saliva again.

Strongly flavoured foods and alcohol can cause temporary bad breath. Avoid too many curries and dishes prepared with garlic and onions.

Smoking leaves the breath stale and reduces the flow of saliva thus compounding the problem. It also increases the risk of developing gum disease, which is yet another cause of bad breath.

Severe dieting can lead to an unpleasant "fruity" breath from ketoacidosis, the breakdown of chemicals during fasting.

Medical causes of bad breath are rare but they can occur e.g. throat infection, tonsillitis, and catarrh. Diabetes, liver disease, kidney problems and acid reflux can all be associated with the problem.

The easiest way to find out if you have bad breath is to ask a close friend, or family member, for their honest opinion - if they say you have bad breath you should visit your dentist. If you really don’t want to ask your best friend then lick the inner surface of your wrist, wait a few seconds and sniff the licked area.

Treatment for bad breath depends on what’s causing it but usually improving your oral hygiene (regular brushing and flossing) will help the problem.

Brush your teeth at least twice a day paying special attention to the gum margin. Floss or use an inter-dental brush to clean between the teeth and remove any trapped food. Your dentist may advise a mouthwash – make sure it is not acidic. Brush you tongue with a soft toothbrush to remove dead cells, bacteria and food debris

Other measures, which can help prevent bad breath, are eating a healthy, balanced diet, reducing alcohol intake and drinking plenty of water. Chew sugar-free gum, especially if your mouth feels dry. Giving up smoking will also help. Apart from keeping your breath fresh these measures will keep the teeth and gums healthy and help prevent periodontal disease.

Lin has several articles on oral hygiene and periodontal disease on her blog at:- http://therabreath-review.blogspot.com/

Privacy Policy

Privacy Policy for http://www.badbreathbanish.blogspot.com/

If you require any more information or have any questions about our privacy policy, please feel free to contact us by email at kumo_wai@yahoo.com.

At http://www.badbreathbanish.blogspot.com/, the privacy of our visitors is of extreme importance to us.
