Speaking about bacteria, there is one other fact that you must understand about these bacteria. They are classified as "Anaerobic" - which literally means "Without Oxygen". They thrive in an environment where Oxygen is NOT present. That is why they DO NOT LIVE ON THE SURFACE OF YOUR TONGUE! They live in between the papillae (fibers) that make up your tongue!

These sulfur compounds are actually by-products of anaerobic bacteria (Fusobacterium and Actinomyces, among others). Everyone needs these bacteria, because they assist the digestion process. But, unfortunately, for some, as yet undetermined reason these particular bacteria are found in higher numbers in those anguished by Bad Breath. (Various theories attribute this to hormonal changes, a history of medications, usually antibiotics or sulfa drugs-which create an imbalance of oral bacteria, or even Genetics-these disorders appear to run in some families.) We do know however, that it seems to be evenly split between men and women.

Conditions under which the problem becomes worse:

Dry Mouth
Although some cases of dry mouth are naturally occurring, most cases are caused by one of these factors; prescription medications (usually prescribed for high blood pressure or depression) antihistamines, and adult beverages, with alcohol in them. (see "Why Regular Products Don't Work")

When your mouth is dryer, you have less Saliva. Saliva naturally contains Oxygen, which keeps your mouth healthy and fresh. These bacteria are anaerobic, which simply means that they will thrive and make more sulfur in the presence of little or no oxygen. Thus if you have less Saliva, you have less oxygen, thereby creating an anaerobic environment, perfect for the bacteria to produce more of these odorous and sour/bitter compounds. Post-Nasal Drip
We know that proteins contain amino acids, which in turn contain sulfur compounds (see text above). When a person has a post nasal drip, mucus drains and coats the back of the tongue and throat, exactly where bacteria live (see diagram above). Since mucus is made up of interlinked strands of protein, the bacteria have a field day, breaking down these proteins into odorous and sour tasting sulfur type compounds. What About The Sinuses?

First of all, these anaerobic bacteria cannot live in the sinuses. When someone has a sinus infection, one of the common symptoms are intense sinus headaches, caused by the pressure from the infection in the sinus. If you don't have these powerful headaches, you probably don't have a sinus problem. The fact is that once someone has an elevated amount of these anaerobic bacteria, they will create the problem from any protein source, including mucous, phlegm, etc, which drain down the back of your throat into the area where these bacteria live.

High Protein Foods
These bacteria love those proteins, and certain foods are packed with them:

Milk and Cheese and most other dairy products. (The fat content does not matter.) If you are lactose intolerant, do not eat or drink these products! Since your system cannot digest them properly, they are available to the bacteria for an extended period of time. A recent research article from the Los Angeles Times (November 1996) on lactose intolerance showed that nearly 67% of all Americans can be classified as "Lactose Intolerant". This is due to the fact that in a diverse population such as we have here, there is a predilection for Asians, Hispanics, and African-Americans to be lactose intolerant.

Fish are high in proteins. As many people eat a high fish diet, logically they make the problem worse.

Coffee with caffeine (and even without) contains high levels of acids which cause the bacteria to reproduce more rapidly and create a bitter taste for many people. (Virtually any acidic type of food will do this.)

Coffee drinking was one of the problems that my patients used to have. After starting my treatment, they have been able to go back to coffee drinking (in moderation of course) without any bitter tastes afterward.

De-Mystifying the Mouthwash Myth

As we mentioned earlier, all people have bad breath on occasion. When they do, most people immediately reach for the mouthwash. Not only is this ineffective but this action can also exacerbate the condition. Why is this so?

Mouthwash contains flavoring and dyes but most importantly the primary component is alcohol! They claim to kill bacteria, which is true in most cases. However, the bacteria is quick to return with an exponential affect because the alcoholic content causes dry mouth which is the leading cause of bad breath. It creates a very ineffectual cycle of repetition.

Commercial mouthwash products also contain other harsh chemicals. Studies have shown that excessive amounts of mouthwash irritate the gums, tongue, palate and mucous membranes in the mouth. If the user is a smoker AND consumes alcohol, heavy use of mouthwash can even cause certain cancers. It would be prudent to look at some of the other methods to deal with bad breath and stay away from the mouthwash.

If you would like to freshen your breath try preparing your own breath freshening mouthwash. A rinse consisting of a few drops of peppermint oil in a glass of water will do the trick nicely just don’t count on it to kill bacteria. Also just use it as a rinse and do not swallow. There are other essential oils that work as well. Try tea tree, myrrh, spearmint, and ginger are also effective. Rinsing your mouth with salt water is a great home remedy for a sore throat. It is also good for eliminating bad breath. You might also try rinsing with lemon or lime water as well. Both are equally effective and may taste a bit more pleasant than salt water.

Try drinking a small amount of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water at least once a day. Banish the breath mints and chewing gum.

Neither of these commercial products are particularly helpful as they only mask the problem and in fact could cause tooth decay. Try some of our alternative recommendations:

Remember the trick the Greeks used? Anise seed is readily available and chewing on a few of them work just as effectively today as they did several thousand years ago. Fennel, cinnamon and cloves also work well. Try popping a few into your mouth after meals to fight bad breath.

Boil a mixture of myrrh resin, sage leaves and lavender flowers in a small amount of water. Gargle three times a day as a bad breath remedy.

Aloe vera will cleanse the colon and prevent toxins that could possibly back up in the digestive tract.

Getting to the “root” of the bad breath problem.

Poor dental hygiene is a major factor for the cause of bad breath. Yes, you’ve heard it before, brush and floss after every meal and make regularly trips to your dentist for cleaning and examination. But, how many of us actually follow this regimen. Not enough, according to the American Dental Association. They report that periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in the United States. Periodontal disease actually takes place in two different stages.

Gingivitis is the first stage and only affects the gums. Gingivitis IS reversible if caught before it moves into the second stage called periodontitis. Periodontal disease is irreversible, causing tooth loss and potential bone damage.

We have discussed the leading cause of bad breath in a previous chapter. Many of the same causes apply to the risk factors for periodontal disease such as tobacco and certain drugs. But there are other factors for periodontal disease which can also manifest as bad breath. Some of these additional risk factors are:

· Ill fitting dentures or bridges
· Teeth that are crooked
· Old fillings that no longer fit their cavity
· Pregnancy

The symptoms of encroaching periodontal disease also closely mimic some of the same symptoms of bad breath, with bad breath actually becoming symptomatic with periodontal disease. Some of these not previously mentioned are:

· Bleeding gums
· Teeth that are loose
· Gums that are swollen and tender
· Changes in the bite
· Gums that are receding away from the teeth
· Changes in prosthetic dentures

Periodontal disease is nothing more than plaque. While it may sound harmless, quite the opposite is true. The buildup of this plaque also causes bad breath. Get rid of the plaque and you will eliminate the bad breath and reap the benefits of healthy gums.

Plaque is the carrier for that sulfur producing bacteria that we discussed earlier. It creates a sticky film that is always present in your mouth. When you eat or drink you add to the buildup of plaque. Plaque is a pesky creature that is also a bit shy. He likes to burrow in and hide just beneath the gum line where he develops a breeding ground for more of his bacterial friends. You can smell them, but it can be difficult to even know that plaque is hiding away and doing its damage.

This is why regular brushing and flossing is so important. You need to ferret out the problem and deal with it. It’s an ongoing process and you’ll NEVER be rid of it as long as you like to eat, drink and oh yes, live! You must brush at least twice a day to remove all traces of bits of food and plaque. You must floss every day taking care to reach every hidden scrap between the teeth. Brush your tongue daily. Ugh! A nasty tongue has to be one of the worse offenders for bad breath. Using your soft bristled brush, brush the tongue gently, taking care not to gag yourself. Do try and reach as far back as comfortable to remove as much of the offending buildup as you can. It’s in that region toward the back of the tongue that produces the majority of the bad breath.

Did you know that bad breath can be a sign of a serious problem?

The term bad breath or halitosis originates from the latin language which means Halitus (breath) and Osis which means situation. Literally, it translates as having bad breath.

Almost 90 percent of bad breath is caused by sulphur-producing bacteria that lived in the rear of the mouth. Most of the time, this is linked with the lack of cleanliness of the mouth, apart from hollow teeth, gum infection and Xerostomia.

Xerostomia has special characteristics such as having a dry mouth, thick saliva and often feeling thirsty and the need to 'wet' the throat. Generally, Xerostomia is caused by dehydration, stress, using mouthwash that contains alcohol, old age, radiotherapy and certain medicines such as anti-depressants.

Illnesses or more serious complications could also cause bad breath. For example, changes in the hormone, indigestion, sinus, tonsils infection, even cancer, diabetes, chronic bronchitis as well as heart and kidney problems.

Chronic heart problems can be detected through one's bad breath. Usually, the breath will smell like acid or metal and unlike normal. Whereas, when breath smells like ammonia, it can be certain that the person suffers from a kidney problem because of the high level of ureum in the blood.

The strong and pungent smell of ammonia is a result of a chemical process. These compounds then enters the respiratory system, so as to cause bad breath.

If even after brushing teeth the breath still smells bad, then it is not caused from cavity in the mouth, but from the digestion system. Do you experience the difficulty of removing your bowels? Then it's constipation that causes bad breath.

This process, by which germs in the intestines metabolises against built-up food leftovers in the large intestine and cannot be distributed as it should be. Anything more than that, if not excreted or removed, then it will change to poison which later will be absorbed again through the blood system.

When possible, try for the time being, to avoid food that could trigger bad breath like fish, meat, dairy products, spicy food, shallots, garlic, coffee and anything sweet. However, if you cannot help it, drink lots of plain water so that the smell can be protracted and is excreted through urine.

Chew a sprig of parsley or mint before and after a meal to get rid of after-meal bad breath.

For added measure, brush your tongue and the back of it plus use a tongue scraper if required.

If the cause of bad breath is from the digestion system, you can consume some medication, which can clean all wastes that clung and remain in the large intestine, so that the condition returns to normal.

How about a tonsil infection?

The tonsils that are infected, especially if it is acute, indeed could cause bad breath. The infection is caused by Streptococcus Hemolyticus germs which have unique typical characteristics. If you often feel pain in the lower waist area and back, rheumatism and the constant pounding of the heart, then bad breath is caused by an infected tonsil. Also, these germs at the same time tries to attack the kidney, the heart and the nerves.

The tonsils formed are small but are part of a network of limfoids that produces the lymphocytes cell (one of the white blood cells types) that plays a role in producing Imunoglobulin A.; which is one of the defence systems in the body.

I started with just brushing my teeth constantly but we know this is just not achievable when you are at work. I also was chewing gum but again this is not always acceptable in the working environment that I am in. No body wants to be greeted by someone chewing like a cow. Mouthwash was also hard to use because I would have to find somewhere to spit it out.

Many of you may be asking why I did not go to the doctor and or dentist to see what the problem was. Well, I did. The dentist did do some work on my teeth but this did not alleviate the problem so off I went to the doctor. He could not find anything dramatically wrong with me but he did say that I am one of the unfortunate ones who suffer from Halitosis, which in turn leads to very bad breath.

He gave me some tips to help fight these bacteria that was the cause of my concern but still was not really helping me. I then did a google search as we computer nerds do and came up with something that I thought I would try. And I am glad I did because so far so good.

Palorin comes in a tablet form, which I thought was good as it made it easy to use. Although you do have to have it 3 times a day with food. This can be a bother, as like most of us working people we do not always have time to eat regularly. The other thing that helped me over the line was that it was homeopathic so I gave it a go.

Obviously this product is expensive compared to chewing gum or using a mouth wash but it does work for me so that makes it worth it. I do buy the tablets in bulk so it works out cheaper but it is still not something that everyone can afford. I also found that whilst some of the ads for this Palorin say it works instantly, I found that it did not work straight away for me but in about a week it was working really well. Lucky I have a great partner who was able to tell me this!
